Mr. Magorium’s Wonder Emporium

Late last night, I found myself wanting to watch a movie. After about an hour of trying to find a movie to watch (I’m really indecisive), I ended up watching Mr. Magorium’s Wonder Emporium – one of my absolute favorite movies.

Mr. Magorium (Dustin Hoffman) is this eccentric 243 year-old owner of a fantastic toy store (the wonder emporium). He gives the toy store to Molly Mahoney (Natalie Portman), a struggling pianist who works at the store, when he believes his time has come to move on in life. When he hands over the store, strange things begin to take place in the toy store.

It’s a little crazy, it doesn’t make too much sense, the story-line is all over the place, and it’s just an overall strange movie. But I love it. It’s funny and has the best life lessons.

Some of my favorite quotes from the movie:

“When King Lear dies in Act V, do you know what Shakespeare has written? He’s written “He dies.” That’s all, nothing more. No fanfare, no metaphor, no brilliant final words. The culmination of the most influential work of dramatic literature is “He dies.” It takes Shakespeare, a genius, to come up with “He dies.” And yet every time I read those two words, I find myself overwhelmed with dysphoria. And I know it’s only natural to be sad, but not because of the words “He dies.” but because of the life we saw prior to the words.”

“We breathe. We pulse. We regenerate. Our hearts beat. Our minds create. Our souls ingest. 37 seconds, well used, is a lifetime.”

“We must face tomorrow, whatever it may hold, with determination, joy and bravery.”

“Your life is an occasion. Rise to it.”

I recommend the movie to anyone who wants an hour and a half of laughs; you won’t regret it!

Also, happy March to everyone! May this month bring much joy and happiness (and hopefully nicer weather!).

  1. OMB!!! I so LOVE that movie!!! In fact, that was the movie where I saw, and fell in love with sock monkeys! A testament to that was getting my very own (even as an elder woman lol)
    Take a look: https://fimnorawestcaw.wordpress.com/2015/02/24/psyched-out/ That’s my little Cappy. 🙂

The last quote is one of our favorites! I used to have it as a ‘signature’ on a forum I belonged to.

Great choice of movie. We’ll be watching it again in April, on the birthday of our own little sock monkey.
